LIZZ WRIGHT
THE ORCHARD 2008: 41/2 Stars
Talk about the ability to sing country, blues, folk, and gospel…. Lizz Wright is as talented as she is beautiful. While I know her voice has been described as both heavy and smooth as molasses, her voice reminds me, if you will, of Mel Torme’s nickname, The Velvet Fog. It is smoky smooth as a glass of Laphroag scotch whiskey and just as warm going down. I have several of her albums and she just keeps getting better and better.
Her newest album is The Orchard. It is a collection of songs that defy being categorized, most of which she has co-written. While some may call her a jazz singer, I disagree. She has far more of a blues sound. In the end, you realize …. don’t label her; just listen, and enjoy her talent. She wraps her voice around the spiritual “Coming Home,” evoking images of toil and tribulation. Led Zeppelin’s “Thank You” is strong and soulful and Ike Turner’s “I Idolize You” is a lazy, easy groove. “Hey Mann” and “Song For Mia” are heartbreakingly beautiful, while “Another Angel” is soft and tender. “Leave Me Standing Alone” is upbeat and yet bitter while “Strange” is delicate yet haunting.
Lizz Wright’s voice is older than her years. Experience and deep, true emotion live in her voice and she delivers it all without yelling or screaming. She gently pushes you to fall under her spell. Verve has another winner here. With The Orchard, Lizz Wright cocoons you in sultry, soulful joy. So, when you are in the mood for something a little different, try Lizz Wright. You will not be disappointed.

I downloaded this CD, based upon the review and absolutely loved it. I loved each song I heard the first time I heard it. That never happens!
