I first heard about Brightwood Bistro from an article I read in the Miami Herald about the changes taking place in Washington, DC. The Georgia Avenue, NW corridor was one of the neighborhoods the article focused on.
While visiting DC recently, my husband and I went looking for a new place to have something to eat and drink and I thought of Brightwood. We just happened upon it as we headed to Silver Springs, MD. You have to park on the street, which can be challenging, but we found a space in less than ten minutes. In DC this is a good sign...
It is an upscale but comfortable neighborhood establishment. The lighting in the primary dining creates an intimate atmosphere. The bar area is a bit more casual and also has tables for dining. We sat at the bar. The service was efficient and friendly. The Mango Caipirinha was exceptional, one of the best caipirinha’s I have had from New York to Miami. There were a number of flavor choices for this cocktail.
The menu is not very extensive, but well thought out. The Fried Bone Fish, served whole with plantain, curried stewed peppers and onions seemed to be a big hit with those around us. We ordered the Rittenhouse wings. They were big and crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. They were served with a sweet and spicy sauce, which was a little too sweet for my taste. However, I seemed to be the only one who felt that way. Other available appetizers include frogs’ legs, shredded beef wraps, crab cakes and mussels. I look forward to trying the Shrimp N’ Grits and the sauteed shrimp with rice noodles in Thai lemon grass broth on my next visit.
I highly recommend this bistro whether for drinks, light fare or for dinner. The prices are moderate for DC. I would consider this a good place to have a business lunch. Check the website for daily happy hour specials and other special events.
