Sylvia's Soul Food Uptown NYC: 2 Stars!

Nostalgia can be overrated. Sylvia's Uptown NYC. Don't Go 2 Stars!

Food was not good. The pork chops were tough. The fried shrimp, though fresh and properly battered, were super salty. The ribs were all fat no meat. The side salads were tasty, but that is because it's salad and they are not even listed on the menu. The fried chicken livers were also an exception, lightly battered and tender.

The service was good. All of the staff were smiling, courteous, and polite. We had small children at the table and our server was very conscious of placing things away from their reach.

I appreciate the people, but not the dining experience and will not return.

Sarabeth's NYC. 4 Stars!

In Manhattan and looking for a nice, moderately priced brunch. Try Sarabeth's at Central Park next to The Plaza Hotel (Sarabeth's has multiple locations in the city). I ate there today (As l always do when in the city) and enjoyed watching the horse drawn carriages as I sipped Mimosas.

My table had French toast, pancakes, omelets, cheese blintzes, and eggs benedict. All plates were clear. The applewood smoked bacon is a must side order. Expect a short wait for a table, but who cares just focus on the great view and NYC people watching.

Radio City Christmas Spectacular. 4 Stars!

At the Rockette's Christmas show at Radio City Music Hall. Quietly it's hot! The Rockette's were formed in 1932 by Roxy Rockefeller as precision dancers called the Roxyette's. They are literally still kicking today! Parents take your kids next Christmas. 4 Stars!

Avatar: 4 Stars!

Visually stunning! I strongly recommend seeing it at the IMAX in 3D, or at least in 3D on the biggest screen you can find.

It's a story about one of the primary reasons countries go to war, natural resources. It's a story about our connection to nature, the past, the present and each other. It's a love story. And of course, it's a story about triumph and good overcoming evil.

There are exciting action packed sequences. But there are also beautiful scenes with next level special effects. Sigourney Weaver, as always, is a delight to watch.

Go see for yourself.

OPI Gel Manicures 5 Stars!

Ladies if you hate chipped nail polish, constantly retouching your nails, or spending money for manicures only to ruin them within the hour - and fake nails are not an option. OPI gel manicures are your gift to yourself. They are completely dry at the end of the manicurist's application. It lasts 10-14 days still looking fresh. It costs a little more, generally $40 - $45, and takes more time to apply and remove. But sooooo worth it! I am hooked.

Mercadito 4 Stars!

www.mercaditorestaurants.com
108 West Kinzie Street
Chicago, IL 60654-4508
(312) 329-9555
Subway: Clark/Lake

I love this new Chicago hot spot. The restaurant has replaced an old favorite La Pomme Rouge. Mercadito has completely redesigned the space and its festive and fabulous. As the name suggests, Mercadito serves Mexican/Latin cuisine and has a top notch Tequila selection. I highly recommend the cucumber cocktail listed on the menu.

The food is very good. It is a great spot for group dinners. The group prix fixe menus are reasonably priced and portions are ample. I love the fish tacos.

Mercadito also has a small upscale lounge downstairs, Double A. Reservations are required and I understand they are very discerning.

This Is It! Double 5 Stars!

"This Is It" was Awesome! Michael Jackson was a genius and an enlightened soul. His final concert series would have been something never seen before and I believe one of if not the best concert ever. Who's bad? While clearly Michael hired the best of the best of dancers, singers, and musicians to perform with him for this show, the young woman on guitar was phenomenal. Do yourself a favor an spend two hours with Michael. You will be uplifted and inspired. Double 5 Stars!

Bar Novo, Renaissance Chicago. 4 Stars

The Renaissance recently opened a new bar, Bar Novo. It is a spacious modern bar/lounge. They have a true full bar selection and use fresh ingredients to prepare cocktails. I highly recommend the strawberry champagne cocktail. The bar menu is upscale. All of the plates I saw looked good. The wings (a bit oversized) and calamari were quite tasty. New Bar Novo at Renaissance Hotel Chicago 4 stars!

Lucky Strike Fried Chicken Salad: 5 Stars!

Nothing healthy about a fried chicken salad, but they sure can be delicious! Try the fried chicken salad the next time you are bowling, drinking, or watching the game at Lucky Strike. This one comes with all white meat nuggets, avocado, bacon, corn, and tomato on a bed of lettuce with ranch and bbq dressing. Super Tasty. 5 Stars!

Graham Elliottt. 4.5Stars!

Graham Elliott still serving delish, fun, upscale food. On a recent visit my food included cheeze-its, marshmallows, and cornnuts. All wrapped into complicated upscale cuisine that was plated beautifully. And, of course, Lynn House is still the resident rock star mixologist. 4.5 Stars!

W Hotel Washington D.C.: 3 Stars

The POV Terrace roof deck at the W DC has fabulous views of the Washington skyline and monuments. The POV lounge has the most phenomenal view of the Washington Monument that I have ever seen. It's worth the visit just for the view.
The food and drinks are, however, just OK. I do recommend the Pina Colada, which is made with real coconut milk. People speak highly of the vodka lemonade, but I did not taste it. I was extremely disappointed with my cosmo. It tasted like straight alcohol and was served in the smallest martini glass I have ever seen. I was shocked and disturbed that the W would serve such a cocktail. I would return for the view and I'd stick with rocks drinks.

September 25, 2009 to October 9, 2009

Meet the artist reception: Friday, September 25, 2009, 6:00pm to 8:00pm

Viewing hours:
Embassy of Haiti
Monday through Friday, 10:00am to 3:00pm

The Embassy of Haiti in Washington, DC is pleased to announce the opening of Images and Landscapes by Yolène Legrand. The exhibition opens September 25, 2009 and presents more than 20 works in oils, pastels, etchings & aquatints by Yolène Legrand, a Haitian-born landscape painter who currently lives in New York City.

Yolène Legrand is a visual narrator and teller of stories, and although she still paints figures, she is better known for her landscapes. Her sensitive and evocative treatment of her subject matter captivates the viewer with a bright yet balanced pallet. This sophisticated colorful calmness defines her work as colors are skillfully restrained.

Legrand’s interest in art began when she was a child and although she went on to study Finance, her passion for art always remained strong. Eventually she enrolled in the Art Students League of New York where she developed her artistic talents. She has been teaching art to young people and adults in New York, Georgia, and New Jersey.

Ms. Legrand is an internationally recognized artist and her paintings have been exhibited in many galleries and museums in the US, Europe and Haiti, and are included in many private and corporate collections.

Cafe Milk & Honey 3.5 Stars!

1920 W. Division Street
Chicago, IL 60622
773.395.9434
www.milkandhoneycafe.com

A busy Wicker Park cafe serving salads, gourmet sandwiches, house-made soups and pastries. Breakfast is served daily with a weekend brunch until 2pm. For brunch I recommend the Orange Brioche french toast with Toasted Almonds or the vanilla yogurt with fresh fruit and house-made granola. Order the Bloody Mary, which is garnished with tomato, cheese, and a deliciously spicy pickle. Portions at Milk & Honey are substantial, so think sharing.

The staff was friendly; but, I particularly appreciated the graciousness of the hostess who ensured we were seated promptly at a table of our choice and recommended the french toast.

Milk & Honey is cafeteria styled dining. You stand in line to order your food and then are given a number to take to your table and receive service. Seats turnover fairly quickly, so it's worth the wait.

Big Disappointment. Unacceptable service from such a pricey restaurant. It began with my salad, which had the wrong dressing. I should have sent it back, but I did not. When my filet came I had to send it back. It was grossly undercooked and looked like mystery meat! The waitress actually flinched when she looked at it. The only reason this is rated as high as 2.5 is that my dinner companion's pizza was very good and the onion rings were good. But seriously, when pizza and onion rings are the only thing you can order from a restaurant where apps are $15 and mains are $30-$50, you should just skip it!

Simone's Bar: Where the Cool Kids Hangout

Simone's Bar: 3.5 Stars!
960 W 18th St
Chicago IL 60608

Eclectic and Hip Pilsen neighborhood bar with an urban cool decor featuring a pin ball machine theme. There is a diverse beer selection that includes both local and international beers. You can also find fun cocktails like a whiskey or rum hot toddy. The music like the spot is hip and as it gets later there is a DJ. The food is normal bar food. The staff is friendly. The primary downside is that because it's a neighborhood spot, parking is difficult. It's still worth checking out.

The Publican: 3.5 Stars.

837 W. Fulton Market, Chicago IL 60607

The seating is family style and the menu focuses on fine pork, shellfish, and beer. I will start with my favorite dish on the menu. The $5 appetizer, spicy pork rinds. Absolutely delicious! They were like no pork rinds that I have ever tasted. They were light and airy, yet crispy with a hint of vinegar flavor, which I generally don't like in a chip. Other dishes that were really good were the mussels, oysters, and bread (specifically cheese crackers, sourdough, multigrain, and french). The country ribs (really just a pork chop) and the sausage dish were average.

The waiters should be better trained about the beer and wine menu. The beer menu is extensive, but they will not sell those more expensive great European beers if the waiters can't make recommendations of describe the beers' flavors.

Also, The Publican is a restaurant in need of a story that sets the diners' expectations for the evening. The waiters should explain to new diners the type of food they will find on the menu, Brasserie cooking, and that the service is family style.
Other notes. The bathrooms are unisex and there are no mirrors. Ladies need mirrors in the bathroom. The music in the background was very upbeat, which was great for me (e.g., they played the Beasty Boys and LL Cool J's "Going Back to Cali.").

ANGELA'S iPOD

ANTHONY DAVID
ACEY DUECY (2008)

4 STARS

In the mood for a blend of blues, R&B, and hip-hop. Check out Acey Deucy by Anthony David. Anthony David is a Georgia native who has spent his whole life writing songs. His new album is being released by the new label Soulbird Music, a new venture between Universal Republic Records and artist India Arie.

David wrote the song "A Part Of My Life" for India Arie's 7x Grammy nominated album Acoustic Soul. He teamed with Arie to co-write and produce "There's Hope" for Arie's third Grammy nominated album and he teamed with Arie again with “Words” on Acey Deucy. In between writing songs with and for India Arie, David released two independent albums, Three Chords & The Truth and Red Clay Chronicles. Both albums received high critical acclaim.

That is important to note because Acey Deucy is not new music. Rather it is a combination of three songs from Three Chords and Red Clay. If you are lucky enough to have those albums don't buy this one. But if you have yet to experience Anthony David, purchase this album. You will be glad you did. He is a riveting story teller and passionately talented guitar player with a stirring voice reminiscent of Bill Withers and Anthony Hamilton.

SPIRITUAL JOURNEY (DIVORCE)

DIVORCE PERSPECTIVE
JC’s Interview; Part Four

By Angela

This is the final installment in JC’s Interview. When we left off, he was ready to move on with his life and enter a new, positive stage. His story finishes here. And at the end, JC has some words of wisdom to share. I hope they help those of you out there going through what he went through and is still going through.

Okay. It is three years later. Do you think you can fall in love?
Anything is possible.

Do you want to fall in love again?
Yeah. Part of me does.

Why?
It feels good. It’s a rush. You go home and you’re on the phone all night long. That whole, “I can’t wait to see you“. That - a storm is coming and all the lights are out but who cares, we’re with each other.

What about the part of you that doesn’t?
That’s the part I’m working on.

Well, why does that part of you not want to?
Just the fear: The fear of losing. The fear that I am not younger anymore. There is a difference between getting your heart broken at twenty and at thirty and at forty. But when you get to fifty years old and you gotta go through stuff, that’s no good. I don’t want to do that. I understand that there is nothing guaranteed in life but I don’t want to go through those things again.

So, do you believe in marriage?
Yeah.

Would you get married again?
It depends. I wouldn’t want to get married for the sake of getting married. I would want to be married because I want to be with that person.

Do you believe in forever?
No, I don’t believe in forever. I believe in shooting for forever,

What do you wish you knew before you got married?
I wish I knew how to communicate better. I wish I could have seen the signs that there were problems in the marriage and been able to address them.

What do you wish you knew before you got divorced?
How to fight. How to fight for my marriage. I think, had I fought hard enough, she would have never left and we could have gotten through this. Had we fought together, I think we could have crushed whatever it was that was in front of us. I think, when marriages are good, they are unstoppable. And I think, if you put your minds together to fight for it, you can have it. But when they are bad, it’s like sleeping with the enemy because you know all their weaknesses and they know all yours. And you know you can’t put up a shield because the enemy is working from the onside out. Yet, in our situation, I think we could have persevered.

Even though she wanted to be with another man?
Right. I have this sixth sense, I think she didn’t really want to be with this guy. I think the fact that he treated her in a way that I wasn’t was what attracted her to him. But had I known beforehand and fought for her, she would have never left.

You still love your wife.
Do I love her? There’s a place in my heart for her.

It sounds like you still love your wife.
But would I go back to her? No.

Really? I don’t believe you.
My life is different. It is so different now from then. And whatever we had, that was that time and this is a different time and I don’t feel the pull and I don’t feel the draw of going back to her. I can look at it and say that was a good time, a wonderful time. But I don’t have that pull anymore where I wanna get back to that.

If you could, what would you have done differently?
I wouldn‘t work so much,. That’s for sure. Working two and three jobs is not healthy for your marriage. Not in this day and age. Maybe it worked in my parent‘s time, but not for today’s marriages. Somebody is gonna feel like they are losing out. Working all those jobs is not healthy. When do you have time to be with your mate? When do you have time to talk to your mate? When do you have time to build that strong bond? You don’t.

What do you wish someone had told you about how to handle life after the divorce?
I wish that somebody would have constantly been in my ear about not being afraid to talk to somebody or get help. I wish there had been somebody more consistent about telling me things like, “you need someone who can help you articulate what you are going through," “maybe you should write something down about your feelings from day to day," or “maybe you should join a group for divorced men because you need to see men at all the stages of divorce, men in the beginning and the middle as well as men who have made it through.” I never got that.

What did you learn?
I am a lot stronger than I think I am. I learned that I can change my life when properly motivated.

What piece of advice would you give to someone getting married?
Learn everything there is to learn about being in a marriage the proper way. Make sure you are not getting married for the sake of being married but because every fiber of your being wants to be with that person. Make sure you are willing to treat that person the way you want to be treated at all times and in all phases of your life. If you can do that, then you should get married.

What piece of advice would you give to a man getting a divorce?
I would ask him, “have you explored every avenue that there is to keep your marriage together“. My belief is that marriage is the foundation of civilization. When you say you love somebody, you fight for them. But when all else fails, you must do the right thing. If you have children, you must take care of them. If you have no children, look at it as a business deal being dissolved because, when it is over, since you have no children together, you don’t have to see each other ever again. I would say, “you have to do what is best for you to move on“. That doesn’t mean crush the other person. It doesn’t mean destroy the next person. It means moving on so that both parties get what they need. Besides, if you destroy the other person, you are really destroying yourself. And at the end of the day, you still won’t have what you want. So, that is when you can start healing yourself. Right then, during the divorce, you can start healing.

And what recommendation would you give to start healing?
Seek professional help. And if they don’t have the money or insurance , seek a religious leader who deals with marriage counseling and is not an extremist. And make sure you see them regularly and often. Think how long you were married. You were in it twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Well, it is going to take a while for you to be okay.

Do you have anything to add? Is there anything else you want to say?
I just hope this helps somebody. That’s all I can do…. help somebody who might not know what to do.

Thank you.

SPIRITUAL JOURNEY

.24 New Year possibility
by ASD

So it is three months into the new year. In the new year I usually make a list of things I want to accomplish and see how long I can stick to it. But this year I have been unable to follow through with my usual method of operation. I have been in a sort of malaise since roughly November. The end of the year is usually hard for me - lots of people close to me have, over the years, died or gotten very sick from the end of November through the end of December. I find the holidays to be bittersweet. This year was even harder for me. I lost my muse, realized a friendship was over and had to accept that some of the things I was working on will not be as I want them to be, at least not yet.

Sitting down to my computer has been a challenge. Actually writing my journey practically impossible. Sharing my thought and feelings actually impossible. But I am an optimist at heart and so I have finally been able to accept the changes that life has brought me and am now ready to begin again, with a new attitude and renewed vigor - well no real vigor yet. I must admit I am still working on that. But, because this is a blog about my journey, I shall endeavor to attempt to share some of what has happened to me in the last few months. Perhaps writing about it will help me gain deeper clarity and closure. Perhaps my telling you will help some of you, if you are going through similar things.

First, my muse. I love to write. I keep a journal which I write in regularly. I write short essays, poetry , songs and prose. I find it helps me to stay grounded and keeps me true to me. I also write this blog. Every now and then, someone comes along who inspires me. They say things I feel, or things I totally disagree with. Either way, they force me to look at things differently. I had a muse for a little while. It was nice. It made getting to my computer fun, inspiring and challenging. But my muse has left. My muse just stopped talking to me, sharing with me. My muse moved on. While I would have loved advance notice, that did not happen. My muse just vacated the building without a good-bye. So I have not been eager to sit and write - a rarity even for me. I think I got used to my muse without even realizing it. Hell, it took me a long time to even realize I had a muse. But I have accepted the end, am appreciative for the time I had and am now ready to move on alone. Change and learning to let go is apparently a never ending process with me. I just hope I get better with each ending, with each change.

Next. My friendship. I keep seeing previews for the movie He’s Just Not That Into You and I think of my situation. Whether a romantic relationship or a friend relationship, all relationships involve feelings. I spent two years working on a one-sided friendship. I knew it at the time. I even confronted my friend about it. They always denied that it was one-sided. I should have walked away. I never did. I always believed perfection was just around the corner. I believed if it was important to me, it must be important to them. But they brought their representative to the friendship. Anyway, I gave them an ultimatum and they actually stepped up to the plate. But when I did what they asked of me, they never responded. When I got in touch with them they were polite but they never made any attempts to get in touch with me. It was as thought the ultimatum forced them to look at us and realize they did not want to be friends. Once again, they did not tell me. They also just walked away. That hurt. I guess it is not something that I am used to.

But I have let that go. Trust , it wasn’t easy. Friendships are important to me. I don’t make a lot because I don’t necessarily trust people. But I did trust this person. I felt safe with this person. I believed in the goodness of this person. I believed in our friendship. I did miss this person when we stopped talking, but I have learned when people can walk away without a backwards glance it means they were never into you in the first place and that the absence of your friendship in their life is their loss and not yours. So I looked back, know I gave it my best and then I let it go and I moved on. Easy - no. Necessary - yes. Done - for the most part. It’s like I say. Letting go is a constant process. We let go of the old to make room for the new. But I keep the memories of the good . There is always good.

Finally. I spent the last year making attempts to mend some bridges. Some of my mending has been very successful and some has not. The bridges I have not been able to mend left me feeling fragile and lost. But I evaluated my actions and decided I had done the best I could do. I had taken steps to reach out but had not really gotten a positive reaction. It is clear to me that we are all at different points of growth in our lives. Sometimes the answer is to let go and try again later. When they are ready. That is what I am doing. I am letting it go for now. I will try again later. I don’t believe in giving up. I am beginning to realize that today is not always the time. Sometimes the answer is tomorrow.

The one thing this holiday season has reminded me is this. Sometimes you think a door is slamming you in the face when it is really trying to open wide to the possibilities and opportunities of tomorrow but you are standing in its way. I am firmly relieving that I have been standing in the doorway of my better today. I am finally moving aside to let possibility in.

S0 ….. Happy New Year. And, while I don’t believe in resolutions I do believe in possibility. So, here’s to the new year and the possibility it brings. I hope you all stand aside and let your doors swing wide open. I do believe in possibility. I hope you do too.

“Another fresh new year is here . . . Another year to live! To banish worry, doubt, and fear, To love and laugh and give!
This bright new year is given me To live each day with zest . . . To daily grow and try to be My highest and my best!
I have the opportunity Once more to right some wrongs, To pray for peace, to plant a tree, And sing more joyful songs!”

SPIRITUAL JOURNEY (DIVORCE)

DIVORCE PERSPECTIVE
JC’s Interview; Part Three

By Angela

When we left off, in Part Three of JC‘s Interview, he was trying to find a way to go on with his life with no guidance or advice. He was putting on a front of normalcy but not functioning adequately at work, sleeping indiscriminately with women and drinking way too much. His feelings of devastation and betrayal are eating him up inside. He is barely holding on. His story continues.

So from January to April you lead a life of devastation. You drank too much and slept with women in an indiscriminate manner. Is that correct?
Yes.

But you say that changed after April. What happened?
A new phase began for me. After we sold the house, I decided I was going to buy a condo. But my father convinced me to move back home.

How did that change things?
I was still devastated. Still drinking. Still sleeping around. But I began to question my life. What was I going to do with my life now? I knew I had to find a better way to deal with my situation. I knew I had to find something to keep me busy.

What did you decide to do?
That summer I decided I wanted to go back to school. And, when I went back to my high school to get my transcripts, I ran into a friend who pointed me in the direction of education, since I worked part-time with kids.

Did you follow through?
Yes. I quit my trucking job and began going to community college full time. That kept me busy, kept me involved. And I made my part-time job, working with kids in group homes, my full time job.

Did that change your life?
Well, I cut back drastically on my drinking and hanging out. I couldn’t with school. I was working hard trying to get good grades and learn a lot. But I still never addressed my emotional issues. I just put those on the back burner. Unfortunately it manifested in my dating. I would date women and then cut them off. I was cold and callous. I wasn’t physically or mentally brutal but I acted as though I didn’t care. I wouldn’t let people get too close. If women tried to get close, they got hurt. If they got hurt, I didn’t care. And as far as being loyal …. Nah. That wasn’t in my vocabulary. I would date two and three women at the same time and not care if I got caught. If you caught me, I was like, ”oh well, you got me.” That was my attitude. In some cases, if she cried, I might feel bad momentarily, but, the next day, I would move on.

And, I didn’t really care if, when I got caught, they wanted to be vengeful or get even with me. If they were like, “I’m gonna get you”. I was like, “go ahead, get me”, “bring it on”. They would look at me like, “what do you mean?” But my attitude was: “what are you gonna do, slash my tires? Okay, bring it”. I wanted to be hurt. Before that, when I was going into bars, I was looking for a fight. I wanted to feel pain other than the pain that was in my heart. So with these women, it was the same thing. It was: “I’ll cut you”. “Okay.” “I’ll trash your car.” “I’ve got insurance.” they would really be like, “what is wrong with you?’ But my attitude was, “I just got my heart stepped on, so you can’t do anything worse. You wanna smack me, you wanna cuss me out, you wanna spit on me, you wanna get your cousin to beat me up, fine. I’ll be here. You know where I live.” I wanted to feel pain. I didn’t know what else to do. And if you hurt me, cool. That would give me something else to think about, something other than my wife, the woman in my life who had already done so much damage to me.

Was your wife still your primary focus?
I may have denied it then but, yes. She was my primary focus. In everything I did. Even going back to school. My whole motivation was to prove that she messed up. All my anger and everything I poured into my schoolwork. My first semester, I took seven classes and finished with a 3.7 index. Now you’re talking about somebody who hadn’t been to school in twenty years and when he was in school had a C average. So I was that focused. When I started, I was computer illiterate but by the end of the first semester, I was doing power point presentations.

But I was determined to prove what I could do. Especially since one of the ways she communicated with the man she cheated on me with was through the computer. But, because I was computer illiterate, I never picked up on it. I thought she was just paying bills and she was paying bills but she was also sending him e-mails.

How else did you change your life?
As I said, I quit my trucking job and began working full time as a child care worker. And even though it was a pay cut, I no longer wanted to drive a truck. And I continued to date and drink in my spare time.

Were you still unwilling to let women in?
Yes

Still devastated?
Yes

Still with no one to talk to?
Yes

So, the only areas of your life that were improving were work and school?
Yes.

And are they still improving?
Yes. I have been promoted to managerial staff at the treatment center. I now attend a teaching school and am doing well. I have maintained an academic scholarship. I belong to various academic, national, and community service clubs and organizations. I am also on the board of directors of a not-for-profit organization.

In light of all of your accomplishments, what are your feelings toward your ex-wife, now?
I still miss what we had. I miss who she was. But now, it is almost as if she is a different person to me. I don’t know if that is real or perceived, but I look at her as two different people. The person I know today is different from the woman I knew. When we talk, it’s almost as if I’m talking to a new woman, someone totally different. I don’t know if it’s because I can’t handle the possibility of a blended woman but I do see her as two different people. And when we talked, we talked about surface things and the conversations lasted no more than five minutes.

So ends Part Three of JC’s interview. It is good to see that, in spite of his emotional state, he is able to see improvement in his life. I always find it interesting, the things that motivate us to improve our lot in life. Sometimes we spend so much time questioning the how and why that we lose sight of the positive in our life. I am glad he did not focus so much on the negative that he let a positive slip away. Next time, Part Four of JC’s interview.
